The Internet is widely considered as one of the greatest achievements of man in the 20th century, perhaps in all history. Today, the Internet boasts a huge number of applications; from sending and receiving letters to buying groceries in an interactive environment from the comfort of your own home, the Internet has covered it all. And the way technology is evolving, I am quite sure it will be amazing to see the kind of future applications that will come forth from the Internet.
For a developing nation like Bangladesh, the Internet can be considered not only as a gateway of ICT applications, but at the same time as a tool to develop and strengthen the use of ICT among SME organizations, as well as to create countless job opportunities for IT graduates.
The SME sector has become a very important segment of the Business Community in Bangladesh. Due to scarcity of resources and financing ability it is of the utmost importance that companies in this sector are able to utilize their limited resources to the fullest extent possible. Proper and efficient use of computerization and automation should help them in a big way to reach an optimum leverage of their scarce resources.
ICT has stamped its authority in the 21st century, making it one of the most essential components for any organization to succeed. It is very much essential that these organizations are equipped with the latest hardware and software. However, there are two huge cost hurdles that an SME faces when wanting to acquire computer resources for minimum office automation. One is the PC hardware which may cost anywhere from Tk20,000 to Tk.50,000 per workstation, and the other is PC Software which again may cost anywhere from from Tk.50,000 to Tk 100,000 per workstation.
Thanks to the wise decision of the Government to allow tax free import, almost all computer hardware and peripherals have become affordable compared to what it was before.
However the necessity for acquiring licensed copies of popular software has kept the cost of the PC unreachable to the SME. Using pirated software is not the solution, especially since the Copyright Act of Bangladesh will become law very soon. It is currently on the Parliament floor awaiting legislation. The Copyright Act contains very serious penalties (up to 2 year jail terms and fines) for any one copying or distributing pirated software.
